KEEPING THE FAITH

In times of crisis, many turn to religion for divine guidance. But people of faith have been banned from gathering in their houses of worship for fear of new clusters developing in their communities, forcing services to be held remotely by video conference. Without physical congregations, priests and imams went online to deliver sermons by live stream. As some of the stricter measures were lifted, communities were once again allowed to congregate, although social distancing remains in force.

The Egyptian government imposed a two-week-long curfew, starting on 25 March 2020, and decided to close the churches and mosques in the country as part of the country’s efforts to prevent the further widespread of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus that causes the COVID-19 disease. Egypt’s Coptic Orthodox Church also suspended masses during the lockdown.
