As Covid-19 accelerated across the world and most governments imposed strict lockdown measures to contain the pandemic, Brazil’s president Jair Bolsonaro continued to downplay the disease’s severity and refused to order a nationwide shutdown. Ignoring pleas from his regional governors and health officials while thousands of people were dying of coronavirus and case numbers in Brazil were surging, he continued holding public rallies for thousands of his loyal supporters, who turned out en masse to pledge their support and accuse the country’s Congress and Supreme Court of conspiring against Bolsonaro.
